Printed T-shirt – what lasts best in the wash?

June 9, 2025

The print cracks, the colour fades and the fit is a thing of the past. We've all been there. But it doesn't have to be that way. Learn what separates a throwaway t-shirt from one that will last for years – even if you forget to wash it at 60 degrees (don't).

Printing technology – what fits best?

It all starts with how the design ends up on the shirt. And no, not all prints are created equal. Here are the most common methods:

1. DTG – Direct to Garment

  • Detailed, soft print, works best on light cotton t-shirts.

  • Lasts well if you follow the care instructions.

  • May fade faster on dark garments or if you tumble dry.

2. Screen printing

  • Often used for larger runs.

  • Thicker and more color-intensive print.

  • Very durable – often the one that lasts the longest .

3. Heat transfer (heat transfer / vinyl)

  • Common in cheaper t-shirts or custom prints.

  • Plasticy feel, may crack or come loose.

  • Avoid high washing temperatures!

4. Sublimation

  • Only for polyester or polyester blends.

  • The print is melted into the fabric – cannot crack.

  • Incredibly durable, but not for cotton fabric.

Summary:
Do you want durability? Screen print or DTG on good cotton. Vinyl? Only if you want to be disappointed after 5 washes.

T-shirt fabric quality – more than just cotton

Many people think that “100% cotton” is a guarantee of quality. It’s not. Here are the differences that actually affect durability:

▪ Ring-spun cotton

  • Finer fibers, denser weave.

  • Softer and more durable than regular cotton.

▪ Combed cotton

  • Another step up. The fibers are "combed" to remove shorter threads = even better durability.

▪ Weight: 180 g/m² or more

  • A sweater that weighs over 180 grams per square meter (gsm) holds its shape better and feels more substantial.

▪ Fabric blends: cotton + polyester

  • More durable in the long run, but may feel less “natural”.

  • Good for those of you who often neglect the washing instructions.

Laundry tips that actually make a difference

There are two kinds of people:

  1. Those who follow the washing symbols.

  2. Those who wash everything at 60 degrees to “get rid of bacteria”.
Guess who needs to buy new t-shirts more often?

Here are our 5 golden rules for not sloshing around the press :

  1. Turn the t-shirt inside out.

  2. Wash cold – preferably 30°C, absolutely maximum 40°C.

  3. No dryer (heat destroys the print).

  4. Mild detergent without bleach.

  5. Skip fabric softener – it impairs the color fastness.

Checklist: How to choose a t-shirt that lasts

  • ✔️ DTG or screen printing

  • ✔️ Ringspun or combed cotton

  • ✔️ Minimum 150 g/m² fabric weight

  • ✔️ Follow the washing instructions (really)

  • ✔️ Avoid tumble dryers – always.
