Scientists estimate that there are around 8–10 million animal species on Earth, but less than a quarter have actually been identified and named. Insects and marine species account for the largest unknown fraction.

Insects completely dominate in terms of species and individuals. Ants, beetles and flies are found in enormous numbers and play a crucial role in ecosystems, although they rarely receive the same attention as larger animals.

Animals are used as symbols for qualities like strength, laziness, stubbornness, cunning or chaos. That's why animal motifs work so well in humor, satire and design – they say something without having to be explained.

Common animal motifs include dogs, cats, birds, ducks, bears, wolves and odd favorites like frogs or foxes. Often it is animals with distinct personalities or cultural connotations that stick.

Animal motifs are used in all ages. The difference lies in the expression. The same animal can be cute, aggressive, ironic or completely absurd depending on the style and context.

Animal-themed products are common gifts because they feel personal without being private. An animal can represent a personality, an inside joke, or just something the recipient likes.
